apparently the age of wisdom is 18
Or so they tell my at the oral surgeon's office at Caritas Carney Hospital. At 18, the wisdom teeth start to grow in. And I, at 25, am getting them removed rather late in the game. But at least I'm not 30, because the teeth get much harder to extract after that age. I've never had surgery before, but people tell me it's not so bad...just gotta keep taking the painkillers afterwards. Also, I will be stocking up on movies and books, since I'm planning on being laid up for a while.
I hardly ever blog anymore because there's nothing much to report, at least nothing of interest. If you'd like to know, I am currently writing a speech about human trafficking, putting together a newsletter for BU's international relations department, writing a 15-page paper about the First Amendment as it relates to the Falwell v. Flynt case, and working on a PR campaign for a local homeless shelter.
Oh, and on Tuesday night Laura and I will be going to hear Stephen Prothero speak at BU's Barnes & Noble about his latest book on religious literacy in America. He has gotten a lot of media coverage for this book, which goes to show how prominent in people's minds this topic is.

Movies are crucial. Actually, as soon as you start to feel pain (i.e. when the painkiller starts to wear off), take another pill and turn on a flick to distract yourself from your misery. Also, I think it's hilarious that you linked to your hospital.

I plan to keep taking painkillers before I start to feel any pain, so as to stay ahead of it. It's called "pre-emptive pill-taking."

Eat ice cream! And...more ice cream!
Wine might sting, but isn't alcohol antiseptic?
Anyway, hope you aren't laid up for too long. I got mine out when I was 14, but that was because I needed the space in my mouth for braces. I looked like a chipmunk. I didn't take any pain killers, but I can be stubborn that way. And so I don't recommend it.

PS Did you link to your hospital so people can go visit you while you have surgery?
Posted by: funke at March 26, 2007 12:00 PM
I linked to the hospital because isn't that what people do on their blogs? Link to things? The hospital might be getting absorbed into the system soon, so I'd thought I'd do my part and add a little traffic to its website. And if people want to come visit me during the whole 2 hours that I'm there, they can, I suppose.
Mmm...ice cream. I'd like to have some of Ben & Jerry's "Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream" available in the freezer by that point, but I'm afraid it has bits of waffle in it which might inhibit the healing process. Guess I'll just stick with plain vanilla.

I think I had no: ice cream, movies, tv, or hospital when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. It can be done.

Key word difference there, Mom: "pulled." I think when you have surgery it's quite different. But I am willing to be corrected.

Three of my teeth have grown in and one hasn't, so I guess technically those three are being pulled. And they told me that I shouldn't have any problems with swelling, etc., with those teeth, just with the one that hasn't grown in. So I think Mom might be right here. But that doesn't mean I won't be watching Anne of Green Gables while recovering.
Oh, and the oral surgeon actually just rents out part of a medical building at the hospital. I'm not actually getting this done at the hospital per se.
