Washington DC in the fall

I went to DC this weekend to see various siblings (Anna, Andrew & Andrea, Joe), friends, etc., and was struck with the beauty of the fall there. Although color seems to be late in the south this year, the trees lining Capitol Hill were nonetheless full of charm, quelling any frustration I might have with the irrationally-laid out streets of that city.

We went to Georgetown and got caught in the ruckus of the filming of a Nicole Kidman movie on M Street. The crew was yelling at the crowds to cross the street elsewhere, but we crossed anyway, Nicole Kidman notwithstanding (no sign of her by the way, but my sister-in-law Andrea figured it out by looking at the name of the film on the back of one of the directors' chairs). I think Andrew and Lauri might have accidentally gotten in as "extras" in one of the scenes.

Saturday night was spent in Baltimore with my cousins Steve and Mary Smallman. It was nice hanging out in their new house, chatting, eating salmon, watching Steve's latest video projects for a camp at which he works (one of which was filmed at Covenant College), and going to New Song Community Church, which I haven't been to in a long time. The sermon was great (about treating each other as people made in God's image) and the people were joyful. When they introduced the visitors (which was our group), I was in the bathroom, so as soon as I walked out of the bathroom back into the sanctuary my cousin Mary said, "And this is my cousin Heidi," and everyone clapped. Took me by surprise. As I walked back to my seat laughing, Andrea leaned over to me and said, "Nice entrance."

The last stop on Sunday was the Botanic Gardens near the Capitol, where we could see a long line of people waiting to see Rosa Parks, who was laying in State in the rotunda. The fall trees reflecting in the pool looked on somberly.

"Irrationally laid-out streets of the city"?!?! What is complicated about a simple four-way succession of interlocking letters and numbers? Granted, the state streets can be confusing, but this is no Boston.
